.eu domains held by UK owners to be suspended

Jan 13, 2021 - Good to know

On February 1, 2020, the United Kingdom left the European Union. After the transition period ends on December 31, 2020 the below entities will no longer be eligible to hold a .eu domain name:

  • Undertakings or organizations established in the United Kingdom but not in the Union
  • United Kingdom citizens who are not residents of a Union Member State
  • United Kingdom residents who are not Union citizens (UK registrants)

What will happen to these .eu domains after December 31, 2020?

At the end of the transition period (December 31, 2020), EURid, the administrator of .eu domains will enforce the following measures:

  • On January 1, 2021, EURid will email all UK registrants that their domain name is no longer compliant with the .eu eligibility criteria and their domain will be moved to the “Suspended” status until March 31, 2021.
  • EURid will restrict the registration of new .eu domains by UK registrants
  • On April 1, 2021, EURid will again email all UK registrants that their domain name is no longer compliant with the .eu regulatory framework and their domain will be moved to the “Withdrawn” status.
  • On January 1, 2022, all the domain names in the “Withdrawn” status, formerly assigned to UK registrants, will be revoked and become available for general registration.

What can you do to retain your .eu Domain?

You will lose eligibility unless you can demonstrate compliance with the .eu regulatory framework by updating your registration data before December 31, 2020.

You could do so by indicating a legally established entity in one of the eligible Union Member States, or by updating your residence to a Union Member State, or proving your citizenship of a Union Member State irrespective of your residence.

Please take action on your domain to ensure it continues functioning after December 31, 2020. For additional information, please contact our support team.
